Learn about Orchids
Know Your Orchid
Orchids belong to one of the two largest families of flowering plants, comprising approximately 28,000 recognized species across 702 genera. They thrive in nearly every geographical region, adapting to a variety of climates. The Orchidaceae family accounts for about 6–11% of all seed plant species. Some of the largest genera include Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species), and Pleurothallis (1,000 species). This family also features the Vanilla genus, the type genus Orchis, and popular varieties like Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. Since the 19th century, the introduction of tropical species has led to the creation of numerous hybrids and cultivars. To successfully grow your orchid, it's essential to know its species or hybrid name, as this will help you understand its geographical origins and the climatic conditions you should aim to replicate. Below are some basic guides to assist with the most common types available.
